Bridge Plugging Lost Circulation Material
1. Product Overview
Bridge Plugging Lost Circulation Material is mainly composed of elastic fiber materials (long/short cotton fibers, shell, mica, vermiculite, etc.) and rigid bridging materials, which are surface-modified and compounded according to a specific particle size distribution. It is a comprehensive plugging agent developed and optimized based on traditional bridging lost circulation materials. It forms a tough skeleton with elastic fibers, assisting mud to form a robust filter cake for effective plugging of thief zones. Featuring simple and efficient on-site operation, it allows flexible adjustment of the ratio and concentration of coarse, medium and fine materials according to the severity of lost circulation, adapting to various leakage formations. It has been successfully applied in shallow and medium-deep wells, compatible with fresh water, salt water and various mud systems with outstanding plugging performance. The product does not affect drilling fluid rheology and has good compatibility with other additives. It is non-toxic, safe and environmentally friendly without pollution.

Application Cases of Bridge Plugging Lost Circulation Material for Drilling Fluids
1. Fractured Leakage Control Case for Carbonate Formations in Halfaya Oilfield, Iraq
Case Background: The Mishrif formation of Halfaya Oilfield in Iraq is typical fractured carbonate reservoir with extremely developed multi-scale fractures. Severe partial loss and intermittent full loss often occur during drilling. Conventional single plugging materials have unreasonable particle grading, unable to form stable bridging skeleton in large and medium fractures, resulting in low plugging success rate and easy re-leakage after resuming drilling.
Application Formula & Dosage: On the basis of conventional water-based drilling fluid system, 3.0%–5.0% bridge plugging lost circulation material was added. Relying on its coarse, medium and fine multi-particle graded structure, it forms rigid bridging + elastic filling integrated plugging system.
Application Effect: The product rapidly builds a firm bridging skeleton at fracture throats, and the elastic fiber components fill and compact internal voids. It achieves one-time successful plugging for fractured carbonate leakage. The plugging layer features high compactness and strong scouring resistance, no re-leakage during subsequent full-section drilling and tripping. It effectively reduces drilling fluid consumption and downhole complex disposal time, greatly improving drilling efficiency of overseas carbonate complex wells.
2. Graded Plugging Case for Fractured Formations in Eastern Ordos Basin
Case Background: The Liujiagou and Shiqianfeng formations in Eastern Ordos Basin are dominated by fractured sandstone, with irregular fracture opening sizes and coexisting micro-leakage and medium-scale leakage. Traditional plugging agents have single particle size, poor adaptability to variable fracture sizes, and cannot realize layered graded plugging, leading to repeated leakage and prolonged drilling cycle.
Application Method & Dosage: According to the actual leakage degree, 2.0%–4.0% bridge plugging agent was added dynamically. The product’s multi-grade particle matching property was utilized to realize targeted plugging of large, medium and small fractures respectively, adapting to variable-diameter fracture leakage working conditions.
Application Effect: The product realizes graded bridging and layered filling for different-scale fractures, forming a multi-layer composite plugging structure with high stability and pressure resistance. All test wells achieved one-time plugging success with zero repeated leakage. The drilling fluid system maintains stable rheology, no adverse effect on subsequent well logging and cementing operations, realizing safe and efficient drilling of fractured formation wells.
3. Micro-fracture Group Leakage Plugging Case for Shale Gas Wells in Southern Sichuan
Case Background: The Lower Cambrian Qiongzhusi Formation in Southern Sichuan is featured with dense developed micro-nano fracture groups, low formation fracture pressure, and frequent subtle percolation and slight leakage during horizontal section drilling. Conventional rigid plugging materials have poor filling performance for micro-fractures, resulting in long-term low-volume leakage and difficulty in wellbore pressure build-up.
Application Dosage: 2.0%–3.0% bridge plugging lost circulation material was added to the shale gas water-based drilling fluid system, cooperating with fine particle additives to form a rigid-elastic composite plugging system.
Application Effect: The product combines rigid particle bridging and elastic fiber filling advantages. Rigid materials build stable supporting frameworks for medium fractures, while elastic fibers fill micro-fracture gaps densely. It thoroughly solves the long-term micro-leakage problem of shale fractured formations, effectively improves wellbore pressure-bearing capacity, ensures stable drilling of long horizontal sections, and provides good wellbore conditions for later fracturing and production.
4. Severe Deep Fractured Leakage Control Case in Daqing Oilfield
Case Background: Deep wells in Daqing Oilfield have deep burial depth, developed high-angle fractures, severe downhole dynamic leakage, and large instantaneous leakage volume. Conventional plugging materials have poor structural stability under high downhole pressure, prone to framework collapse and failure, resulting in repeated plugging construction and high drilling cost.
Application Method & Effect: The product was applied at a dosage of 3.5%–5.0% for centralized plugging construction. With optimized particle gradation and high structural strength, it can withstand high downhole differential pressure, form a high-stability bridge plugging layer inside fractures, and completely block leakage channels. The on-site one-time plugging success rate is high, effectively avoiding multiple repeated plugging operations, significantly reducing drilling fluid loss and shortening complex disposal cycle.
5. General Plugging Case for Permeable Leakage in Shallow Unconsolidated Formations
Case Background: Shallow unconsolidated formations in various blocks have loose rock structure, high porosity and strong permeability, prone to continuous permeability leakage during drilling. Most plugging products either have slow film-forming speed or poor filling effect, which cannot quickly control leakage and affect continuous drilling operation.
Application Method & Effect: The conventional application dosage is 2.0%–3.0%, suitable for fresh water and salt water drilling fluid systems. The product can rapidly form bridging plugging and dense mud cake on loose formation surfaces, quickly block pore percolation channels, thoroughly solve shallow permeability leakage problems. It has good compatibility, does not affect drilling fluid rheology, features fast leakage control speed and stable effect, and is widely applicable to shallow well leakage prevention and plugging operations.
