3.1 High-Efficiency Plugging & Fluid Loss Control
Under differential pressure, modified paraffin particles deform and fill formation pores and micro-fractures to form a low-permeability, dense plugging layer. With an HTHP fluid loss reduction rate ≥45%, it significantly reduces filtrate invasion, protects the reservoir, and stabilizes the wellbore.
3.2 Low Fluorescence Property
With a fluorescence level ≤3, it does not interfere with mud logging and well logging operations, avoiding misjudgment of hydrocarbon zones. It is an ideal choice for exploration wells and appraisal wells.
3.3 Excellent Compatibility
It is highly compatible with various drilling fluid systems including water-based and oil-based fluids, and can be added directly without additional pre-treatment.
3.4 Dual Solubility
With both water solubility (≥50%) and oil solubility (≥40%), it disperses uniformly in drilling fluids of different polarities, suitable for various operating environments such as fresh water, brine, and oil-based systems.

Application Cases of Modified Paraffin Plugging Agent in Drilling Fluids
1. Adaptive Deformation Plugging and Anti-collapse Case for Medium and Low-temperature Micro-fracture Formations
Case Background: Medium and shallow shale and mudstone formations are developed with a large number of micron-scale micro-fractures and pore gaps. The formation temperature is low, and conventional rigid plugging agents such as ultra-fine calcium carbonate and silica have fixed particle sizes, poor fitting performance for irregular micro-fractures, and cannot achieve tight filling. Drilling fluid filtrate easily invades along unfilled gaps, causing shale hydration spalling, wellbore instability and enlarged wellbore diameter, which affects continuous rapid drilling.
Application Formula & Dosage: On the basis of conventional water-based drilling fluid systems, 1.5%–2.5% modified paraffin plugging agent is added. Utilizing the characteristic of low-temperature softening and deformation of modified paraffin, it realizes adaptive flexible plugging matching formation temperature and fracture aperture.
Application Effect: The modified paraffin plugging agent softens and deforms under formation temperature and downhole pressure, automatically adapts to irregular micro-fracture shapes, and forms a continuous and dense flexible plugging layer on the wellbore surface. It thoroughly blocks filtrate invasion channels, effectively inhibits hydration and dispersion of clay shale, significantly reduces wellbore enlargement rate and downhole block falling risks. It complements rigid plugging materials to form rigid-flexible composite plugging, greatly improves wellbore stability of medium and low-temperature fractured formations, and ensures efficient and stable drilling.
2. Mud Cake Optimization, Drag Reduction and ROP Improvement Case for Horizontal Wells
Case Background: Horizontal wells and directional wells have complex wellbore trajectories and long friction sections between drill string and wellbore mud cake. Conventional drilling fluids form thick and rough mud cakes, resulting in high downhole torque and drag, obvious stick-slip vibration during directional sliding, low mechanical drilling speed, and high risk of differential pressure stuck pipe, which restricts the extension efficiency of long horizontal sections.
Application Method & Dosage: 1.2%–2.0% modified paraffin plugging agent is added to horizontal well water-based drilling fluid systems. It integrates plugging and lubrication functions, optimizes mud cake microstructure while plugging micro-pores, and improves mud cake smoothness and compactness.
Application Effect: Modified paraffin can fill micro-pores on the mud cake surface to form a thin, dense and smooth lubricating mud cake. It effectively reduces the friction coefficient between drill string and wellbore, significantly lowers downhole torque and tripping drag, eliminates stick-slip vibration, and improves tool face control accuracy. It greatly reduces the risk of differential pressure stuck pipe, improves mechanical drilling speed and horizontal section extension efficiency, shortens the drilling cycle, and ensures safe and efficient construction of directional horizontal wells.
3. Leakage Prevention and Wellbore Stabilization Case for Shallow Loose Formations
Case Background: Shallow unconsolidated sandstone and loose interbedded formations have loose rock structure, developed primary pores and poor cementation. Conventional plugging agents have poor adhesion and are easy to fall off, resulting in minor leakage of drilling fluid, poor wellbore cleaning effect, and easy collapse of loose stratums during tripping and pump speed switching, which affects drilling safety.
Application Dosage: 1.8%–2.8% adhesive modified paraffin plugging agent is added to shallow drilling fluid systems. It has strong film-forming adhesion, which can form a flexible protective film on loose formation surfaces to consolidate rock structure and prevent micro-leakage.
Application Effect: The modified paraffin material has good flexibility and adhesion, which can firmly cover loose formation pores and micro-fractures, effectively solve the problem of minor leakage in shallow loose formations. It consolidates the broken and loose wellbore wall, prevents formation particle peeling and wellbore collapse, stabilizes drilling fluid performance and wellbore morphology. It improves the adaptability of drilling fluid to shallow complex loose formations and ensures safe and smooth drilling of shallow well sections.
4. Low-fluorescence and Low-damage Reservoir Protection Drilling Case
Case Background: Oil and gas evaluation wells and low-permeability reservoir drilling operations have strict requirements on drilling fluid fluorescence, logging adaptability and reservoir protection performance. Conventional asphalt and polymer plugging agents have high fluorescence and easy residual pollution, which interfere with logging interpretation, block reservoir pore throats, reduce permeability recovery rate, and cause irreversible reservoir damage.
Application Method & Effect: The conventional dosage is 1.0%–2.0%. The modified paraffin plugging agent features zero fluorescence, low residue and easy reversibility. It can form a temporary flexible plugging layer on the wellbore surface to prevent solid-liquid phase invasion. The plugging layer is easy to decompose and remove in later-stage production, with high core permeability recovery rate, no interference with logging and testing operations, realizing low-damage protective drilling.
5. Non-toxic and Pollution-free Green Drilling Adaptation Case
Case Background: Environmental sensitive areas, offshore drilling and ecological protection zones have extremely strict requirements for drilling fluid environmental protection performance. Traditional plugging agents contain toxic components, heavy metal residues and difficult biodegradable substances. Waste mud and discharged water are prone to cause soil and water pollution, failing to meet green and environmentally friendly drilling construction standards.
Application Method & Effect: The dosage of environmentally friendly modified paraffin plugging agent is 1.5%–2.5%. The product is non-toxic, tasteless and highly biodegradable, without heavy metal and harmful residue. While realizing efficient plugging, filtrate reduction and wellbore stabilization, it will not cause environmental pollution. The waste drilling mud is easy to treat and meets the requirements of environmental protection discharge and ecological green drilling construction.
