Application Cases of Polyacrylamide in Drilling Fluids and Water Treatment

1.  Coating Inhibition and Wellbore Stabilization Case for Water-based Drilling Fluids

Case Background: Shallow and medium-deep mudstone and argillaceous interbedded formations have strong clay hydration and dispersion tendency. During rapid drilling, a large number of cuttings are dispersed into fine particles, resulting in increased drilling fluid viscosity, deteriorated mud quality, serious wellbore hydration, hole enlargement and borehole instability. Conventional single inhibitors have weak coating and encapsulation ability, poor anti-dispersion effect, and cannot effectively control continuous hydration of clay formations.

Application Formula & Dosage: On the basis of conventional water-based drilling fluid system, 0.2%–0.5% anionic or non-ionic polyacrylamide was added as coating inhibitor. It forms polymer adsorption film on clay and cuttings surfaces to achieve encapsulation inhibition and system purification.

Application Effect: Polyacrylamide has excellent molecular adsorption and coating performance, which can tightly encapsulate clay particles and drill cuttings, effectively inhibit hydration dispersion and mud-making of formation clay. It avoids fine particle proliferation in the drilling fluid, stabilizes rheological parameters and mud performance, reduces wellbore enlargement rate, maintains regular wellbore morphology, greatly decreases downhole collapse risks, and ensures safe and efficient rapid drilling of easy-hydration mudstone formations.

2. Solid Phase Purification and Viscosity Stabilization Case for Drilling Fluids

Case Background: In long-cycle continuous drilling, a large amount of inert fine solids accumulate in the drilling fluid system, resulting in excessive solid content, abnormal viscosity and shear force, increased filtration loss and poor mud cake quality. It is difficult for conventional solid control equipment to remove ultra-fine particles, leading to system performance disorder, increased drilling resistance and reduced drilling efficiency.

Application Method & Dosage: 0.15%–0.4% polyacrylamide solution was added intermittently into the circulating drilling fluid. Relying on molecular bridging and flocculation effect, it aggregates dispersed ultra-fine solid particles into large flocs for solid control removal.

Application Effect: The product has strong bridging flocculation performance, which can effectively aggregate ultra-fine inert solids in drilling fluid, improve the removal efficiency of fine particles by solid control equipment, reduce system inert solid content, and optimize drilling fluid rheology and filtration performance. It solves the problems of mud thickening, poor sand carrying and unstable wellbore caused by fine solid accumulation, maintains long-term stability of drilling fluid system, and reduces downhole complex accidents.

3. Flocculation and Purification Reinjection Case for Oilfield Produced Water

Case Background: Conventional oilfield produced water contains a large amount of suspended solids, oil droplets and colloidal impurities, with high turbidity and poor water clarity. Natural sedimentation is slow and incomplete, leading to excessive suspended solids and oil content in effluent water. Long-term reinjection of unqualified water will cause reservoir pore blockage and water injection pressure rise, affecting oilfield water injection development efficiency.

Application Dosage: In the primary sedimentation and purification stage of produced water, 0.03%–0.1% polyacrylamide is compounded with inorganic flocculants. It is used for rapid flocculation, sedimentation and impurity removal of oilfield sewage.

Application Effect: Polyacrylamide can rapidly adsorb and bridge colloidal impurities, suspended solids and dispersed oil droplets in sewage to form dense and large flocs, accelerate sedimentation separation, significantly reduce water turbidity and oil content, and improve sewage purification efficiency. The treated water has stable indexes and meets oilfield reinjection water standards, effectively preventing reservoir blockage and pipeline scaling, and realizing efficient and economical reinjection and recycling of produced water.

4. Degradation and Clarification Case for High-viscosity Fracturing Flowback Fluid

Case Background: Shale gas and tight oil fracturing flowback fluid contains residual guar gum and polymer additives, featuring high viscosity, high COD, difficult solid-liquid separation and turbid water quality. Conventional single treatment agents have poor clarification effect, long treatment cycle and difficult standard compliance, which restricts the harmless disposal and resource utilization of flowback fluid.

Application Method & Effect: Polyacrylamide is added at a dosage of 0.05%–0.12% in the advanced treatment stage of fracturing flowback fluid. It cooperates with oxidants to flocculate and settle degraded macromolecular organic matter and suspended impurities. It effectively solves the problems of slow clarification and difficult impurity removal of high-viscosity flowback fluid, significantly improves solid-liquid separation efficiency, reduces water COD and turbidity, makes the treated water quality stable and up to standard, and realizes efficient resource treatment of fracturing wastewater.

5. Flocculation Solid-liquid Separation and Harmless Case for Waste Drilling Mud

Case Background: Waste drilling mud has high viscosity, fine particles and stable colloidal structure, resulting in difficult natural settlement and slow solid-liquid separation. Conventional natural drying and curing methods have long cycle, high cost and low treatment efficiency, which cannot meet the requirements of rapid harmless disposal and environmental protection discharge.

Application Method & Effect: The conventional dosage is 0.08%–0.15%. Polyacrylamide is used as the core flocculant for waste mud pretreatment. It can destroy the stable colloidal structure of waste mud, rapidly aggregate fine mud particles into large flocs, accelerate solid-liquid separation and mud-water clarification. It greatly shortens the mud treatment cycle, reduces treatment cost, improves the efficiency of waste mud harmless treatment, and meets the standards of environmental protection landfill and discharge.
