Application Cases of Silica Plugging Agent in Drilling Fluids

1. Accurate Plugging and Anti-collapse Case for Shale Nano-micro Fractures

Case Background: Shale formations are densely developed with nano-scale and micro-scale micro-fractures, featuring strong water sensitivity and easy hydration spalling. Conventional plugging agents have large particle sizes, which can only block macro-fractures but fail to effectively plug nano-micro pore channels. Drilling fluid filtrate continuously invades the formation along tiny fractures, resulting in progressive hydration of shale, wellbore enlargement, block falling and frequent wellbore instability accidents, severely restricting safe drilling of shale horizontal wells.

Application Formula & Dosage: On the basis of water-based drilling fluid systems for shale wells, 1.0%–2.0% nano-silica plugging agent is added. Relying on ultra-fine nano particle size grading, it realizes in-depth filling and seamless plugging of formation nano-micro fractures.

Application Effect: Silica plugging agent has ultra-small particle size and strong diffusion penetration performance, which can accurately fill nano-micro fractures that cannot be blocked by conventional agents. It forms a dense and rigid physical plugging layer on the wellbore surface, effectively blocking filtrate invasion channels and inhibiting clay hydration and dispersion. It significantly reduces wellbore enlargement rate, improves shale formation strength retention rate, thoroughly solves the problem of difficult plugging of shale micro-fractures, and ensures long-term stable wellbore morphology during long horizontal section drilling.

2. HTHP Dense Mud Cake and Fluid Loss Reduction Case for Ultra-deep Wells

Case Background: Ultra-deep well HTHP formations have bottom hole temperatures up to 180–220℃ and extreme downhole pressure. Conventional organic plugging and fluid loss reducers are prone to high-temperature aging, molecular chain fracture and performance failure. The formed mud cake is loose and porous with high HTHP fluid loss, leading to severe filtrate invasion, wellbore hydration damage and increased downhole complex risks, failing to meet ultra-deep well long-cycle HTHP drilling requirements.

Application Method & Dosage: 1.2%–2.2% high-temperature resistant modified silica plugging agent is added to high-density HTHP drilling fluid systems. It features inorganic rigid structure, ultra-high temperature resistance and no thermal aging failure, used for HTHP mud cake optimization and deep plugging.

Application Effect: The inorganic silica plugging agent has excellent structural stability under ultra-high temperature conditions. It can fill the micro-pores of conventional mud cake, greatly improve mud cake compactness and smoothness, reduce mud cake thickness by 30%–40%, and significantly cut down HTHP filtration loss. It effectively isolates high-temperature filtrate invasion, protects wellbore stability under long-term HTHP shear conditions, stabilizes drilling fluid rheological and filtration performance, and provides reliable guarantee for safe and efficient drilling of ultra-deep high-temperature wells.

3.  Salt-resistant Wellbore Stabilization and Plugging Case for High-salt Gypsum Formations

Case Background: Salt-gypsum formations have high mineralization and strong electrolyte interference. Conventional organic plugging agents are sensitive to salt pollution, prone to molecular precipitation, demulsification and performance attenuation in high-salt environments, resulting in damaged mud cake structure, reduced plugging efficiency, and repeated wellbore spalling and instability in salt-bearing formations, which seriously affects drilling construction progress.

Application Dosage: 1.0%–1.8% nano-silica plugging agent is added to saturated brine drilling fluid systems. With stable inorganic chemical properties, it is not affected by high salt and high ion interference, maintaining efficient plugging performance in salt-contaminated systems.

Application Effect: Silica plugging agent has excellent salt resistance and electrolyte pollution resistance, no precipitation or failure in high-mineralization systems. It can stably optimize mud cake structure, plug formation micro-pores and micro-fractures, effectively inhibit salt-water invasion and formation hydration expansion. It solves the technical problem of poor wellbore stability in salt-gypsum formations, stabilizes the overall performance of high-salt drilling fluids, and realizes continuous and safe drilling of complex salt-bearing formations.

4. Low-damage Temporary Plugging and Reservoir Protection Case for Tight Low-permeability Reservoirs

Case Background: Tight low-permeability reservoirs have tiny pore throats and fragile reservoir structures. Conventional plugging agents have unreasonable particle grading, easily cause permanent blockage of reservoir pore throats, reduce core permeability recovery rate, and cause serious reservoir damage, which cannot meet the technical requirements of low-damage protective drilling for tight oil and gas reservoirs.

Application Method & Effect: The conventional dosage is 0.8%–1.5%. The modified silica plugging agent has matched nano-scale particle grading, which can form a reversible temporary plugging layer on the wellbore surface. It effectively prevents drilling fluid solid-liquid phase from invading the reservoir, and the plugging layer is easy to break and remove in the later stage. It features low reservoir damage and high permeability recovery rate, realizing efficient plugging and green protection of tight reservoirs.

5.  Wellbore Cleaning, Leakage Prevention and Stable Drilling Case for Extended-reach Horizontal Wells

Case Background: Extended-reach horizontal wells have ultra-long open-hole sections, long-term drilling fluid soaking and complex downhole stress. The formation micro-fractures are easily opened under working pressure, resulting in minor leakage and poor wellbore cleaning. Conventional plugging agents have slow plugging response and poor dynamic plugging ability during long-cycle circulation, leading to unstable downhole working conditions and restricted horizontal section extension.

Application Method & Effect: The dosage of silica plugging agent is 1.0%–2.0%. It has good suspension and dynamic migration performance in drilling fluids, which can dynamically plug newly opened micro-fractures during circulating drilling. It optimizes wellbore mud cake smoothness, reduces downhole friction and minor leakage risks, improves wellbore cleaning effect, stabilizes downhole torque and working conditions, and ensures safe and rapid extension of ultra-long horizontal sections.
