Application Cases of Sodium Hypochlorite in Drilling Fluids and Water Treatment

1. Drilling Fluid Bacteria Killing and Biological Pollution Prevention Case

Case Background: Water-based drilling fluids contain a large amount of organic polymers, bentonite and nutrient components, which are prone to microbial reproduction during long-term circulating and standing. Excessive bacteria will cause biological degradation of polymer additives, leading to reduced fluid viscosity, deteriorated rheology, odor generation and system acidification. It further causes corrosion of drill strings and casings, and seriously endangers downhole fluid stability and equipment safety.

Application Formula & Dosage: According to the bacterial content of the drilling fluid, 0.05%–0.2% sodium hypochlorite solution was added intermittently. It is used as a strong oxidizing bactericide to control microbial reproduction in the drilling fluid system and maintain the stability of organic additives.

Application Effect: Sodium hypochlorite has strong oxidative bactericidal properties, which can quickly kill sulfate-reducing bacteria, iron bacteria and other harmful microorganisms in drilling fluid, thoroughly solve the problems of drilling fluid deterioration, odor and system instability caused by biological pollution. It inhibits the formation of bacterial biofilms, avoids microbial-induced corrosion of downhole tools, effectively prolongs the service life of drilling fluid systems, and ensures long-cycle stable circulating drilling.

2.  Drilling Fluid Hydrogen Sulfide Removal and Downhole Anti-corrosion Safety Case

Case Background: Some oil and gas formations contain trace hydrogen sulfide gas. During drilling, H₂S invades the drilling fluid, which is highly toxic and corrosive. It not only causes sulfide stress cracking of drill strings and casings, leading to equipment damage, but also brings great safety risks to on-site construction personnel. Conventional sulfide removers have slow response and incomplete treatment, which cannot eliminate hidden dangers in time.

Application Method & Dosage: 0.1%–0.3% sodium hypochlorite was added to the drilling fluid system in a targeted manner. Relying on strong oxidation, it performs irreversible oxidative degradation and neutralization treatment on hydrogen sulfide to realize safe and rapid desulfurization.

Application Effect: Sodium hypochlorite can rapidly oxidize toxic H₂S into non-toxic stable sulfate substances, completely eliminate the toxicity and corrosivity of hydrogen sulfide in drilling fluid. It effectively prevents sulfide corrosion and stress cracking of drilling tools and casings, eliminates on-site poisoning safety hazards, improves downhole construction safety, and provides reliable guarantee for safe drilling in sulfur-containing formations.

3. Oxidation Purification Case for Oilfield Produced Water Containing Fracturing Flowback Fluid

Case Background: Oilfield produced water mixed with fracturing flowback fluid contains a large amount of guar gum polymers, organic additives and residual chemical agents. The water quality is complex, with high COD, high viscosity and excessive organic matter. Conventional flocculation and sedimentation processes have poor treatment effect, difficult water quality standard reaching, and cannot meet reinjection and discharge requirements.

Application Dosage: In the pretreatment stage of produced water treatment, 0.08%–0.25% sodium hypochlorite is added as an oxidizing agent. It is compounded with flocculants to degrade macromolecular organic substances and optimize the water treatment process.

Application Effect: Sodium hypochlorite efficiently oxidizes and degrades macromolecular organic matter such as residual guar gum in flowback water, reduces water viscosity and COD content, and solves the problem of difficult sedimentation of organic pollutants. It significantly improves the removal efficiency of subsequent flocculation and filtration processes, makes the treated water quality stable and up to standard, meets the requirements of oilfield reinjection water, and realizes resource recycling of produced water.

4. Sterilization and Impurity Reduction Case for High-mineralization Oilfield Sewage

Case Background: High-mineralization oilfield sewage has complex ion components, excessive suspended solids, serious bacterial exceeding standards and sulfide odor problems. Long-term reinjection of untreated sewage will cause pipeline scaling, blockage and reservoir pollution, affect water injection efficiency and oilfield development benefits. Conventional bactericides have poor salt resistance and incomplete sterilization in high-salt water bodies.

Application Method & Effect: Sodium hypochlorite solution with stable activity is added in the advanced treatment stage of high-salt sewage at a dosage of 0.06%–0.2%. It features strong electrolyte resistance, high sterilization efficiency and no residual pollution. It can completely kill iron bacteria and sulfate-reducing bacteria in high-mineralization water bodies, remove sulfide odor, reduce water body turbidity, stabilize reinjection water quality, and effectively prevent pipeline corrosion and reservoir blockage.

5. Harmless Oxidation Degradation Case for Waste Drilling Mud

Case Background: Waste drilling mud contains a variety of organic polymers, residual treating agents and harmful impurities, with high COD, high viscosity and poor biodegradability. Direct stacking or discharge will cause soil and water pollution, and the conventional solidification treatment process has high cost and incomplete harmless treatment.

Application Method & Effect: The conventional dosage is 0.1%–0.3%. Sodium hypochlorite is used as an efficient oxidizing agent for pretreatment of waste mud. It can oxidatively break the molecular chains of organic polymers in waste mud, reduce mud viscosity and COD value, degrade harmful organic components, and improve the flocculation and solid-liquid separation effect. It realizes efficient harmless treatment of waste drilling mud, reduces environmental pollution risks, and meets environmental protection discharge and landfill standards.
