Guar Gum
1. Product Overview
Guar gum is a natural high-molecular polysaccharide extracted from guar bean endosperm. It features excellent cold water solubility, superior thickening performance, stable suspension capacity and good filtration control performance. As an eco-friendly natural drilling fluid additive, it can effectively improve mud rheological properties, carry drill cuttings stably, prevent wellbore collapse and reduce formation damage. It is widely applied in onshore & offshore oil and gas drilling, fracturing construction and coalbed methane drilling projects.

3. Key Advantages
• Fast Cold Water Dissolution: No heating required for hydration, suitable for low-temperature seabed and northern winter drilling conditions, greatly simplifying on-site construction process.
• Efficient Thickening & Suspension: Obvious viscosity enhancement effect with low dosage, effectively suspending drill cuttings and avoiding settlement during tripping pipe.
• Excellent Filtration Control: Form compact and thin filter cake on well wall, inhibit shale hydration expansion and prevent wellbore instability.
• Good Compatibility: Compatible with most conventional drilling fluid additives, stable performance in saltwater and calcium-containing formation mud systems.
• Environmental Protection: Natural plant raw material, biodegradable, no pollution to marine and land formation environment, meeting global oilfield environmental protection requirements.
4. Scope of Application
• Water-based drilling fluid for conventional vertical wells, horizontal wells and directional wells
• Low-temperature offshore drilling fluid system and shallow gas well drilling projects
• Coalbed methane and shale gas drilling engineering
• Hydraulic fracturing fluid gelling agent for oil and gas reservoir stimulation
• Lost circulation control for fractured and leaky formations
5. Recommended Dosage & Usage
Slowly add guar gum into drilling base mud under continuous high-speed stirring, keep stirring for 30-60 minutes until complete hydration and uniform dispersion.
• Conventional water-based drilling fluid: 0.2% - 0.8%
• Oilfield fracturing fluid system: 0.3% - 1.2%
• Plugging working fluid for fractured formations: 0.7% - 1.0%
6. Packaging, Storage & Transportation
• Packaging: 25kg woven bag with PE inner liner; neutral export packaging and ton bag can be customized.
• Storage: Seal and store in cool, dry and ventilated warehouse. Keep away from moisture, rainwater and direct sunlight. Shelf life: 24 months.
• Transportation: Belongs to general non-dangerous chemicals. Safe for sea freight, land freight and container export without special dangerous goods transportation documents.
Field Application Cases
Guar gum has been widely used in various complex drilling working conditions worldwide. Four typical and practical field application cases are summarized as follows:
• Case 1: Shallow Onshore Sandstone Drilling
Working condition: Loose sandstone stratum with serious sand production and high API filtration loss. Conventional water-based mud cannot suspend cuttings stably, causing frequent pump clogging.
Application effect: After adding 0.35% guar gum, mud viscosity is improved obviously, API fluid loss is controlled below 4.2mL. Cuttings suspension performance is greatly enhanced, and no sand settlement appears during tripping operations.
• Case 2: Low-temperature Offshore Drilling
Working condition: Seabed formation temperature ranges from 8℃ to 12℃. Most synthetic polymer additives have poor hydration efficiency under ultra-low temperature.
Application effect: Guar gum can be fully hydrated in cold seawater without heating. It keeps stable mud rheology during long-distance circulation, effectively preventing gas channeling and wellbore instability, and complies with marine environmental protection regulations.
• Case 3: Coalbed Methane Horizontal Well Drilling
Working condition: Fragile coal seam with massive micro-fractures, prone to drilling fluid loss and reservoir permeability damage.
Application effect: Added with 0.25%-0.4% guar gum, a compact protective film is formed on the well wall to block micro-cracks. The product is biodegradable, which will not block gas seepage channels after well completion and protects reservoir productivity effectively.
• Case 4: Lost Circulation Treatment in Fractured Strata
Working condition: Medium-deep wells with natural macro-fractures, leading to severe mud loss during drilling.
Application effect: 0.8% guar gum solution forms high-viscosity elastic gel rapidly underground. It cooperates with fiber materials to plug fractures efficiently, reducing mud loss rate to less than 0.3m³/h. Automatic gel breaking after construction brings zero permanent formation damage.
